Management skills

Many people are promoted into management jobs based on their competence andmanagement skills S performance in their previous (and often operational or technical) roles. What is done to give them the management skills, and confidence, to start to work in the best way for their new position?  Too many learn as they go, through trial and error - which is not particularly efficient!! A variation on management development!

The diagram below shows what we mean:
Management skills
Promotion happens because people are good at the "doing" part of their role. (The darker colour) As they move up, they often hang on to a large part of this as it is where they are comfortable - and the challenge is how to deal with the part of their job on the "managing" side. This often leads to them working longer hours to cope and also means the new managers have difficulty letting go of the things they enjoy and want to do.  There is an added problem when this keeps happening - the more senior managers start doing the same thing, maybe to a slightly lesser extent and create the role models which others will follow. Therefore, you have a culture where the managers are over-involved with what happens below them, probably over-controlling and not delegating too! This then leads to them not spending enough time on their real key result areas such as strategic planning and leading their teams!!

There is a range of management skills that good managers are able to use in order to do their job effectively. Having these management skills will build the confidence and ability of your managers. Our management training can provide these, using a practical approach to learning the skills your managers need. Management development is an essential to improve performance and not a luxury.

Whether you want a management development programme to cover the range of  management skills a new manager will need, or you have identified a specific area that requires addressing we can offer the expertise and practical solutions. Your managers will be able to apply these back in the workplace and improve performance. Where possible, we like to work with real issues that affect your managers in the organisation rather than too many theories and case studies.

Do your managers need to improve:
  • Their skills in goal setting or setting performance standards?
  • Their financial understanding or problem-solving and decision-making?
  • Their interviewing skills, are they confident?
  • Project management, to be more effective?

Management training can be done on a broad basis or focused to specific areas. Rather than a one-off event, think about the potential benefits from introducing a management development programme over a period of time and combining different approaches.

Whatever the issues, or possible needs - make contact and we can explore ways in which we can help you.
